MOSMAN RESIDENCE

The Mosman project situated in a heritage conservation area is comprised of the existing substantial Federation house at the centre of the site, a new double height bedroom and family structure to the west and a new terrace and garage structure to the east. The new building work is designed to allow the historically significant original house to maintain its dominance on the site. The visual separation between old and new is achieved by the contrasting contemporary architectural style of the new additions and is further enhanced by the location of a mature macadamia tree on the site.

Due to the steepness of the site the existing house had a poor relationship to the ground along its eastern edge. Melocco and Moore addressed this with stepped terraces which follow the natural slope of the land and serve to increase access to the interior of the house, provide siting for a swimming pool and maintain the integrity of the original house as the dominate feature viewed from Mandolong Road.
