LEWISHAM RESIDENCE

The Lewisham House brief was to economically substantially increase the level of accommodation in a family home without decreasing the garden area. The existing single storey residence was retained and a new upper level added to provide the required accommodation.

The street is a mixture of one and two storey buildings. The new work transitions between the adjacent buildings to maintain a harmonious street elevation.

The floor plan was modified to relocate the main living spaces to the rear providing access to the garden. A central stair was added and a large void provided light, ventilation, a strong sense of connection between the two levels and a heightened sense of space.

Building elements found in the adjacent heritage properties are reinterpreted and introduced in an abstract form. The new work contrasts with contemporary materials, colour and detailing providing a strong dialogue between new and old.
