COOGEE RESIDENCE

The Coogee House’s hillside location offers vast panoramas with every room framing a different view of the ocean and coastline.

Sitting above the old building walls are two high roofed timber clad living elements that dramatically reach out to the ocean beyond. The stepped nature of the roof forms allow for high-level solar access deep into the building.

The northern living area opens through from the private back garden to the east facing ocean deck. The southern living spaces, are by comparison, more protected. They are partially open to the garden at one end and include a cocooned ocean facing window seat at the other.

The walls of the original house were retained and extended as a series of retaining walls. The sand foundations of the site needed to be sculpted and contained. The building sits like a sand castle within the natural surroundings and the dramatic cacti planting.
