CAMDEN CIVIC CENTRE
The Camden Civic Centre is located in the heart of Camden’s historic town centre. Originally designed in 1982 by Devine Erby Mazlin, the building has long served as an important cultural and civic venue for the local community.
Melocco and Moore Architects were engaged by Camden City Council to undertake the refurbishment and extension of the existing centre, with a focus on improving accessibility, functionality and contemporary use while respecting the strong geometry and character of the original building.
The centre includes a large auditorium for live performances, a civic room used as an art gallery supporting regional artists, and community rooms at lower ground level available for public use. The project introduced a new entry portico and balcony, a recording studio, and improved access throughout the building to better support a diverse range of users.
Works included refurbishment and extension of the existing Blackbutt timber ceiling, acoustic upgrades to the main auditorium and art gallery, and the integration of specialist energy-efficient lighting throughout. Performer facilities were enhanced through a complete refurbishment of the green rooms. Sustainability measures included the installation of a large photovoltaic system and upgraded insulation where applicable.
The project renews a valued civic asset and supports greater access to the arts for Camden’s growing community.
