WIRES WILDLIFE RESCUE FACILITY RELOCATION
WIRES Wildlife Rescue Facility Relocation
Randwick City Council
Melocco and Moore Architects were engaged by Randwick City Council to design a new Wildlife Rescue Facility within the tranquil setting of Randwick Environmental Park. The project provides a sanctuary for the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured wild birds and animals, creating a place of care and connection between people and nature.
Developed through close collaboration with both Randwick City Council and WIRES NSW volunteers, the design was shaped by their deep understanding of wildlife care and community engagement. This partnership ensured that every aspect of the facility—its layout, materials, and atmosphere—responded to the shared values of empathy, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.
WIRES (NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service) is Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organisation, whose volunteers provide expert care to thousands of native animals every year. The new facility honours their work, offering a purpose-built, humane environment that supports recovery and wellbeing for both animals and carers.
Importantly, this project represents a prototype—the first of its kind in New South Wales—demonstrating how collaborative partnerships between local councils and WIRES branches can deliver purpose-built, environmentally sensitive wildlife facilities across the state.
Gently nestled behind mature eucalypts, the building blends seamlessly into the landscape. Its light, open structure allows air and sunlight to flow freely, creating a breathable shelter that respects the delicate balance between built form and nature. The result is a quiet, compassionate architecture that embodies simplicity, care, and connection.
