The project required the renovation of a heritage listed 1850′s Maritime Villa and boat shed sited on an exposed peninsula of the inner regions of Sydney Harbour whilst providing additional living and entertaining areas in a slender contemporary concrete living pavilion that is located within terraced landscaped gardens. The new slender pavilion faces the harbour and is located against the southern boundary for the living areas to benefit from excellent northerly aspect and to allow the retention of a substantial eucalpyt. The landscaped terraces and a pool area step down the site from the new living pavilion to the refurbished existing boatshed.

Bridge Community Housing handed over the keys to the Department of Aged and Disability Services to a renovated house in Ashfield. Melocco and Moore Architects designed and documented the alternations to the 1930s house to provide a new and appropriate home for 4 disabled teenagers who are currently living in aged care facilities. An incredibly worthwhile project, hopefully one of many to follow.

The brief for this project was to dramatically increase the level of accommodation to a family home without decreasing garden area and on a very tight budget.

The site exists in a heritage zone and is situated adjoining a set of three two storey Victorian villas to the north east. The original house was a modest single story brick veneer building which was built on a vacant lot adjoining the end villa of the set of three.

Internal rooms have been rearranged on the ground floor moving living spaces to the rear facing the garden and a second storey added which include three bedrooms

The existing building external walls where retained, the only demolition was to internal walls to the ground floor.

No new work was done outside the existing building footprint so as to maintain and enhance the existing garden area. The new second floor creates an elevation to the street which allows a visual transition between the large two storey villas and the single storey dwellings to the south west. The new additions include abstracted building elements similar to the existing adjoining buildings including ground floor bay windows, second floor balconies and a gabled roof form.

Whist these elements reflect and compliment existing traditional building forms the new work contrasts in materials and detail allowing a strong dialogue between new and old.

Non traditional features of the renovation include a large window to the second floor over a void allowing light natural light to the centre of the house. This architectural device pulls north light from over the tall building to the north east.

The Project won a commendation in the 2012 Marrickville Medal held by Marrickville Council.
